Cristobal Hernandez y Nicolasa Alba

Hi Rick,

I’m so excited and can’t believe I actually found someone on this forum with shared ancestors. Do you have your family tree on Ancestry or family search? I have a question though, Nicolasa Alba’s fathers name was Nicolas de Ayala and mother’s Nicolasa de Alba. Why would the daughter take the mothers last name and not the fathers? Maybe this is the reason I’m having a hard time finding records.

Thank you,
Esther

Cristobal Hernandez y Nicolasa Alba

Hi Esther,

Not only did they sometimes take the surname of the mother, sometimes they took the surname of a grandparent. I have even seen people take the surname of a greatgrandparent. This happened often in the 1500’s and 1600’s; and less in the 1700’s. I have even found some instances in the 1800’s where this has happened.

Thanks,
Rick

Very interesting, I wonder why they did that.

You mentioned you had information on Cristobal Hernandez 3 women, would you please send me the information on these lines.

Cristobal Hernandez had family with three women.
I can more send more information on these lines.

I have another question and not sure if you know. So doing research on Ancestry.com I have noticed on peoples family trees they will have date of births on a person for example on Cristobal Hernandez (8 MAY 1667) but there are no records on ancestry that go back this far, wher would they have obtain this information from? I like to double check my work and confirm the information is correct before I add it my family tree.

Thank you,
Esther
