Has anyone been able to find from which side of the family did Ana Francisca and Maria Gabay got their surname? I have tried to find that surname among Spanish surnames with little success. However, I have found that Gabay or Gabai is a Jewish surname. Further I learned that Gabay is a person that performs duties similar to an usher. Here is a description:
"In Judaism, a person who helps to organize the running of a synagogue service; one or more gabai may be involved. Duties include welcoming visitors, ensuring that everyone has a siddur (prayer book), organizing the seating arrangements, and choosing the congregants who will open the ark or read from the Torah. The gabai will also ensure that the wine is present for the kiddush, a prayer recited over wine before it is shared by the congregation."
Any ideas?

In my family line, unposted so far, I have the name Garibaldi/Garibaldo and found it misspelled as Gabay. Maybe you are having the same issue. Try using Garibaldo/Garibaldi.

Gabai/Gabay/Gabady/Gabadi is a surname that is shared by all of us that descend from Martín Navarro de Gabay and Petronila Moctezuma. They were the parents of Francisca Ana de Gabay and María Gabay. Francisca married Lope Ruíz de Esparza y Eguinoa. María married Pedro Fernández de Váulus. Many of us here at NR descend from Martín Navarro de Gabay.
This thread has always dealt with that family and it has no relation to the surname Garibaldo/Garibaldi. They are completely different lineages. There is even the chance that your ancestors are also Gabay and you mistook that it should be Garibaldo/Garibaldi.

Gabay is an interesting subject, I think Gabay is a city in Spain, notably in Castilla. I dont think Gabay the spaniard family was jewish they were among the nobility of spain who would have never married a jew or non-catholic and the arabs. By luck it is a same word in Yiddish, just like english and spanish have alot of word spelled the same but mean totally different things. Francisca Gabay recieved it from her Father, Martín Navarro de Gabay a hijosdalgo. The surname is compouned forming NAVARRO DE GABAY, try searching NAVARRO. It looks like they didnt have many kids to our knowledge. -Daniel

Gabadi vs Gabai
Gabadi is a proper Euskara (Basque) surname. The meaning of the name is unknown, but, as has already been mentioned, it is believed to indicate an origin in the Basque village of Gabat, in present-day Southern France. Gabay is just a latinization (Spanish) of the original Euskara name. You can find several "famous" Basque persons with the name Gabadi.
In Euskara, gabai means "sea gull," but I don't know if it is ever used as a surname.
Many Euskara names have become standard Spanish names, like Elizalde, for example. Lisardi is another Basque name that you find a lot in Aguascalientes that is frequently misspelt.
