Genealogly software

By nc_coleman | 6:15 PM MST, Thu June 08, 2006

Have I guessed the correct forum for posting this message? I'm not very good at discerning into which forum to post certain inquiries or comments - so I just hope for the best.
Anyway - What genealogy software do you use? How would you evaluate it (i.e., what do you like/dislike about it)?
My only experience with genealogy software has to do with my husband's genealogy/family history. That was years ago, on a Mac - I used "Reunion". But we changed to a PC about 4-5 years ago, and I never got software for the PC (consequently my research slowed to a crawl - with occasional research, but notes all in longhand, and in assorted notebooks).
NOW, we have a brand new computer - an iMac (very fancy). I will have to investigate the new generation of genealogy software. If you have any tips to share (general use of software; or specific tips) I would be most appreciative.
Thanks all,
Natalie

I'm not to checked out on the Mac software but with regards to the
different forums:

if it has anything whatsoever to do with genealogy research use the
Research Forum

I think you picked the perfect forum for this message

I would use the announce list if you want to announce something.

in time I think with more messages it will become clear.

sometimes progress involves a bit of discomfort. . .but we'll get there.

My sister and I only use Macs. My family has just about every Mac on the market.

We gave up on Reunion. I'm currently using MacFamily, a new software program developed in Germany. It has a few bugs, but it is cheap and being upgraded constantly.

MacFamily is the best option in my opinion. You can order it online. Try a google search for MacFamily. You can dowload a free sample then pay for a password for full access.

I personally like the Family Tree Maker 6.0. Its easy to use and I can store pictures and print reports easily. Actually, this is the only one I've used so I guess I have nothing to compare it to....

p.s. Glad to be back! This new way of posting messages is kind of strange, and I haven't had time to do any serious research although about a month ago I made some good headway. I've started taking an online Sociology class at the local community college. It's been a long time since I've had to "read chapters" in a text book and it was a little slow at first. Anyway, hope this message posts....

Family Tree Maker is incompatible with a Mac. She requested software recommendations for her new IMac computer.

Family Tree Maker is only operational with an IBM based PC, not an Apple computer.

Software

I recently bought Family Tree maker 2006, it's great.
Also, they have included a 3 month free subscription
to Ancestory.com.

Joseph, thanks for sharing tips in a previous email on
entering information (resources), scanning in pictures
and documents. I recently viewed your updated info in
the files and it was great!!!!
