decipher

By alicebb | 9:15 AM MST, Mon May 16, 2011

I would greatly appreciate it if someone would please help me interpret a name on a baptismal entry.  I'm trying to figure out the paternal grandmother's name:  Manuela ??  It's Zac, Zac, Sagrario Bautismos 1854-1855, image 74, entry 550.  All thoughts will be considered!!Thank you for your help.

Alice,

My wild guess would be Manuela Ruis. I looked at the capital R up above where it
states, yo el Presb. D Ramon Valenzuela.

Does Ruis fit in with your current family lines or would this be a new surname?

Hope this helps,

Alicia,
San Jose, Ca.

Alice,

On second thought, it could be Velis or something similar, because it's so faint
and obscure, it's difficult to decipher what the letters could be.

Alice, It looks like Velis to me. If you look at the opposite page #547, the V in Valenzuela looks similar.
I hope this helps you.

Alicia and Aurora,
Thank you so much for your input.
I didn't want to influence anyone with my thoughts.  But I'm going with Velis.  Actually, the V was the only thing I was pretty sure of because it is identical to the priest's signature of his surname Valencuela. Then there is the dot that appears to be part of an "i" second to the last letter.  But we know how spots and dots appear on these old records, so I wasn't truly sure about that being an "i".  This is the first time for Velis as a surname in my family tree, so I really didn't have a clue.  I'm guessing then that Velis is a variation of Velez or Veles?  Again, thanks so much for your help and if I've made a connection with anyone in our group, I'd love to hear from you.   Alice Blake
