October 30, 1770 map of California Coast including San Francisco Bay Area

Por MADERA_32 | 12:42 AM MST, Mar Diciembre 30, 2015

Found a map of the coast of California dating back to October 30, 1770:

Gives a lot of description on the map and year.

Wow! I have posted maps of San Francisco Bay areas for year 1772 which is on the previous topic of the ship "San Carlos" that traveled up to San Francisco Bay area in 1775. But the 1772 map was from another expedition by the ship called, "La Goleta Sonora"

I want to repeat this one for Pamela who asked about maps:

Here maps of San Francisco Bay area. First is the description where I found it on pg 42 of mapas and planos of Mexico. Doesn’t say what year it is:

Almejas is on the coast side. Zoom up view:

I am curious about San Mateo that is near the shore inside the bay:

Now here is another map of the San Francisco bay but year 1777 but first the description found on page 44 of mapas/planos of Mexico:

Such wonderful and beautiful maps! October 30, 1770 was scarcely one year after the First Expedition (Portola) arrived on the San Francisco peninsula and "discovered" the bay. All those landmarks they named along the route from San Diego and recorded in Crespi's diary.

The undated colored map is so interesting. I wonder why San Mateo is the only land area designated after the mission, presidio an almejas. There were three major villages of the Ssalson tribe that occupied San Mateo Creek, but the Bay Area was densely populated all along the shore so that shouldn't be the reason. I think the map must be before 1786, the year a mission assistencia was set up at "almejas". It was named San Pedro y San Pablo then and should probably appear as such on maps after that year. The geography looks really accurate compared with the other maps.

These are great treasures, thank you Madera!

All my family and history is in Jalisco (Nuevo Galicia)/Zacatecas inside Mexico.

Now! Regarding the San Mateo on that map of San Francisco Bay area? I showed it to a friend who has a Doctorate in History of Zacatecas, Mexico and his speciality is the Hacienda of San Mateo of Valparaiso, Zacatecas, Mexico.

He told me that the Second Conde of the Hacienda of San Mateo, Valparaiso, Zacatecas, Mexico "Miguel Del Berrio y Zaldivar" financed the expeditions and missions that traveled up north and that San Mateo could have gotten its name from the Hacienda San Mateo of Valparaiso, Zacatecas, Mexico which is our region in Mexico.
