Origin of the last name "Rubio"

I have been researching the last name "Rubio" and I have come up with the following information:

According to research author Gutierre Tibon in his "Diccionario Etimilogico Comparado de los Apellidos Espanoles, Hispanoamericanos y Filipinos" 1992 Fondo de Cultura Economica, S.A. Mexico. he states the following:

Rojo, Der.
Var. Ruvio (Sephardi).

Persons with the name Rubio who were knighted go back to the 12 century. Some historians conclude that the name has it's origins in ancient Austurias. An area of mixed Hispano-Celtic peoples.
There is some documentation that the people of this area fought alongside the Carthaginians during the Punic Wars, then for Pompey against Julius Caesar and finally against Augustus. After their eventual defeat, they began to assimilate into roman society as it was in Hispania. Unconfirmed reports state that at least one or two progenitors of the Rubio's served as Consuls to un-named Caesars in Rome. These un-named Caesars may have been Trajan or Hadrian, considering they were from the province of Hispania they may have wanted people of the same province in their administration.

There has been mention of late that the name "Rubio" in general is sephardic in origin and that it derives from the name "Ruben." I had never heard of this until recently. If so, this differs greatly from the information above.

Does anyone have more information on the name Rubio?

Do have a copy of Gutierre Tibon's book or did you find it at a library?
Thanks.

Yes, I have the book in my possession. My aunt brought it from Jalisco, Mexico.

For some reason I could not type more than a few words when I originally posted this topic. So the main part was left out. I'll try it again.

Is there a name or names you would like me to look up for you?
I'd be more than happy to do so. Just let me know.

Regards,

Joe Rubio
