ANTONIO DE MATA Y REBOLLAR

Por Paul Gomez | 11:21 AM MST, Dom Junio 06, 2010

Antonio de Mata y Rebollar is my Maternal (Martinez/Pena) 6th Great Grandfather. He was born about 1674. He married Rosa de Santos on 15 April 1695 in Aguascalientes, Aguascalientes, Mexico. Question: Is the "Iglesia Cienega de Mata", Ojuelos, Jalisco, Mexico, in anyway historical connected to Antonio Mata or his family?

Thank you.

ANTONIO DE MATA Y REBOLLAR

The primary owners of Cienega de MAta were the the Rincon Gallardo family, these guys owned many haciendas across Guanajuato, San Luis Potosi, Zacatecas, Aguascalientasand Jalisco. Since the actual hacienda, is in Ojuelos de Jalisco which consists of a biggerarea, part of the hacienda was probably sold or inherited, im still researching but the Matahave some history, there since there is a huge concentration there. I know that the Gallardobuit the hacienda in 1593 and lost Cienega de Mata in 1740. So probably names changed.
Im still trying to figure out who the patriarch for the mata family is, the compound surnameMata y Rebollar note that two families merged. Rebollar is a common name in Aguascalientes,so my guess the first Mata married in Aguascalientes to a Rebollar.

I have a copy of Antonio's Marriage Record, and his wife's last name looks like "Santos", but I believe in a previous message, Daniel, that you translated her last name as "Bustos", which is supported by the names of their children assuming that "Bustos" is the name in the Record. What do you think?

ANTONIO DE MATA Y REBOLLAR

The complete compound name is DE LOS SANTOS BUSTOS, some records she uses SAntos others Bustossome SANTOS BUSTOS. Surnames are sometimes difficult with our ancestors since in the 12th-16thcenturies they really chose their names and didnt necessarily follow the paternal name, especiallyif they are named after an ancestor so if Juan Rodriguez married Maria Lopez and they had a daughternamed Juana she could be named Juana Garcia after her maternal grandmother, if we say Maria wasdaughter of Juan Lopez and Juana Garcia. Then compound names like de los Santos Bustos were commonand very popular over time many chopped them in half so today in Aguascalientes it would be commonto find people with the name SANTOS, though DE LOS SANTOS BUSTOS can still be found today. Not everyone chopped their names, my grandmother was Garcia de Leon, my latest Esparza ancestorwas in the 1880s and she was a Ruiz de Esparza. Surnames get complicated when two "houses"merge their names due to power, wealth
, or equal status or any other reason. This was super commonwith the Mendoza family, I figure many people wanted to carry this "illustrious name" down. This is why we get Gomez de Mendoza, Gutierrez de Mendoza, Hurtado de Mendoza, Gonzalez de Mendoza,Sanchez de Mendoza etc. They all came from the same family, of Toribio Hernandez de Arellanoand Isabel Hurtado de Mendoza.
