Well, I understand, but was furious when my husband decided not to teach my
children Spanish....I said he should speak to them in Spanish, and I would in
English...but he refused...and now both children regret not knowing the gift
that our parents bestowed upon us...for giving the gift of language is
understanding...
I digress...I wanted to address the subject of "kidnapping"...in truth, this
was a wide spread practice...particularly in communities that had not set up
accepted rituals. My father-in-law- "robo" my mother-in-law...and their
stories naturally differ...but when I was first exposed to this practice, I
realized that this was not new...indeed the practice of having a best man results
from the European ritual of taking a bride with the assistance of friends...

I think the concept of kidnapping that you are talking about is what we think about today as eloping. Basically the couple ran away to get married without parental consent.

thats true,? my grandmother was 'kidnapped' by my grandfather.? thats what she always stated, but my mom said well you stayed with him!!!! she had 7 kids to boot!!!

My dad says that my grandmother stopped 2 men one time from taking my aunt because she happen to have my grandfather's rifle next to her when washing in the river. I know many stories of women having to marry totally unknown strangers. It happened to my husband's grandmother. They stole her at age 12!

I am a little late to reply to this subject, and I do find the concept fascinating some of the research I have done has this practice going back to the early Romans going to other camps and stealing the woman ala the origins of "carrying the brides across the threshold" There was just not enough unrelated woman to go around.

Kidnapping
Glad to hear I'm not the only one with a "stolen" grandmother. In fact, she was from El Durazno but left at the priests home in Jerez (that's abt 5 miles away) for 3 days while marriage arrangements were made. I'm sure my grandmothers parents were interested in saving their/her honor so marriage was the only option for this 14 year old girl.
